The Company
We have taken charge since 1982 in bringing forth the conversation of underrepresentation, misrepresentation, and erasure. We have expanded the conversation beyond the racial binary that still afflicts us to this day. Our communities are representatives from the Global Majority who persevere the intersectionality of systematic oppression.
The gathering of BIPOC young people from different neighborhoods and schools, young people who are strangers to each other but have an interest in dance and performance opportunities lend to an organic bonding of camaraderie, breaking down the barriers as they train to become better dancers and ultimately becoming friends. The years of being part of an ensemble include the sharing of chapters in each other’s lives. They are forever linked to each other as they grow to pursue where their passion lies, the lessons learned from the dance education and experience are permanently part of how they continue to evolve and be active members of the community, making a difference in their corner of the world. Spectrum in Motion has generations of dancers who are in the fields of education, social work, nursing, corporate and non-profit, and an array of performing and visual artists. Each generation dismantles head-on the prevailing reality of underrepresentation, misrepresentation, and erasure. The work continues.
Most of all, when we dance, we are together as a community of people. We are committed to being good people for ourselves and for each other. We tell our stories and share our stories. When we find ourselves on stage or out in the audience, the stories we tell become the lines that bring us even closer together.
